About the residence
A two-week program in July and August for artists aged 13-18, powered by Algarve Arts Academy
The residency takes place in a spacious coastal villa featuring five bedrooms, thoughtfully arranged to accommodate participants comfortably. Most rooms host two teenagers per room, with one larger room designed for three participants.
The house includes a shared workshop space with a stunning view and fireplace, creating a warm and inspiring environment for focused creative work. A large kitchen and open living lounge area provide space for shared meals, discussion, and relaxation.
Outside, residents enjoy a sweeping pool and outdoor terrace, all within walking distance of the seacoast, allowing artists to experience the natural beauty of the Algarve throughout their stay.

Review the residency schedule for a detailed look at the workshops, activities, and events planned throughout the two weeks. All activities accompanied by a professional Guide.
  • Participants arrive, settle into the space, and meet their mentors and fellow artists.
    We introduce the structure of the residency, artistic expectations, materials, and individual goals.
    The evening closes with a short creative warm-up to begin working immediately
  • A full-day intensive workshop focused on landscape painting principles with top notch Hollywood concept artist Jama
    Participants study composition, atmospheric perspective, light behavior, and color relationships in natural environments.
    Live demonstrations guide artists through practical applications
  • Artists begin developing their main landscape piece.
    Mentors provide one-on-one feedback on composition, tonal balance, color harmony, and brushwork decisions.
    The focus shifts toward personal interpretation and artistic voice.
    Wednesday evening is a little Friday with guest local artist in the villa lounge.
  • A dedicated outdoor painting day focused on observation, light analysis, and confident decision-making in changing conditions.
    Participants strengthen their ability to simplify shapes and capture atmosphere directly from nature.
    Emphasis is placed on speed, clarity, and visual accuracy.
  • Back in the studio, artists refine their main works with attention to edge control, value correction, and focal point clarity.
    This is a day of precision and thoughtful refinement.
    Individual critiques help elevate each piece to its strongest version.
  • Participants present their completed works in a structured critique session.
    The residency concludes with a small exhibition-style presentation and professional documentation of the artwork.
    Artists leave with a finished portfolio piece and renewed creative confidence.

Sundays are free during both weeks, offering time to experience the Algarve — from hiking and surfing to exploring the breathtaking Atlantic coastline. Praia da Falésia was named the most beautiful beach in Europe in 2025!

  • Participants are introduced to the principles of realistic portrait drawing, focusing on proportion, structure, and observation.
    Artists begin working from a live model, learning how to measure relationships and capture accurate likeness.
    The session builds the foundation for disciplined, attentive seeing.
  • The week begins with a structured foundation session led by Julia focusing on proportion, head construction, and visual measurement.
    Participants are introduced to their live model and learn how to observe relationshipsy accurately.
    This session establishes the technical discipline and anatomical understanding required for realistic portrait work
  • Artists begin developing a sustained portrait study.
    The emphasis is placed on light logic, shadow patterns, and modeling three-dimensional form.
    Individual feedback helps refine accuracy and strengthen visual depth
  • Participants transition from drawing to painting, focusing on color temperature, skin tones, and brush control.
    The session explores how to build volume through layered paint application.
    Attention is given to maintaining likeness while developing painterly expression
  • Back in the studio, artists refine edges, values, and subtle color transitions.
    Special focus is given to capturing character and emotional presence.
    Individual critiques guide each participant toward a resolved and confident finish
  • Participants present their completed portraits in a structured critique session.
    The residency concludes with a curated exhibition-style presentation and professional documentation.
