Art Beyond the Frame — a gallery at the heart of Algarve Arts Academy.
Our inaugural exhibition brings abstract painting and floral watercolour together. Across these different approaches, it explores the decisions artists make with colour, gesture and form.
Curated by Julia Gurchenkova, Encounters in Color introduces AGA’s approach to exhibitions: looking closely at original works and opening up the ideas and processes behind them.

Enquire About the PreviewAGA grows from the daily life of Algarve Arts Academy: a place where adults and young people learn to draw, paint and work with materials.
Founded by artist and educator Julia Gurchenkova, the gallery creates a connection between seeing the work of other artists and developing an artistic practice of your own.
An exhibition can introduce a new way of seeing. A class can give you the tools to explore it. A conversation can reveal the thinking behind a work.
AGA brings these experiences into the same setting in Fonte Santa, near Vilamoura.
Explore Academy ClassesJulia is an artist, former game art director and educator, and the founder of Algarve Arts Academy. She holds a master’s degree in Monumental and Decorative Art and spent 17 years in the video game industry before establishing the academy in the Algarve.
Her teaching and curatorial work share an interest in how images are made: composition, colour, light and the decisions that shape a finished work.
With AGA, she is bringing exhibitions into the creative environment of the academy, connecting artists, students and visitors through the practice and discussion of art.
